This year 2018 was a mixed bag indeed. For better or worse, South Bali continued to grow exponentially to the north, south, east and west. Traffic in some ways got better, with the new underpass coming into operation, but in other ways worse, as even with the new underpass operating the traffic jams were still bordering on diabolical. Canggu will need some town planning quickly before the traffic comes to a grinding stop, but in a whole, Canggu is a fun place to be for young and old and the amount of great restaurants and bars that continually pop up is almost staggering. It’s surely only going to get bigger and better in the next year. It was a tough year for many as we started out with the lowest of low seasons after tourists stopped arriving after the mess of the airport closing in late November, 2017 (more so than the actual Mount Agung eruption, in fact). The Chinese were banned by the government from coming here until mid- January. It took months to get over that and by the time it did turn around the earthquakes began. That literally shook up or down the Bali high season, and affected the arrival and cashier numbers again for quite some time. After living in Bali many years, my experience tells me you have to learn to accept the good with the bad, and it’s never always going to be too much of one or the other, as they just float along together in unison, for the rest of time I would imagine. Om Shanti Om.

However, even with all this Yin and Yang going on around us Bali is still a great place to be and the number of visitors continues to grow every month, every year. There must be a reason for that and I think I have an inkling as to what it may be; it’s simply a fantastic place to visit and even more, a fantastic place to live. You can’t blame people for wanting to be here. Let’s all be grateful for a moment for what we have.

Happy New Year to all our friends, clients, and readers. Let’s all hope and pray for a great 2019.
