The digital revolution and globalization have created a world without borders and to bring evolution in behavior and in many other aspects of our society’s lifestyles – the art world included. An example of this is how collectors in the millennial generation not only depend on art-fair platforms, but also on online exhibition halls.

Mona Lim, a contributor to Harper’s Bazaar Indonesia, has found that diversity is another big trend seen in the world of collectable artworks. The language of contemporary art is global, and collectors are becoming more and more interested in seeing differences in dialogue (page 50). They can now find innovative conceptual works – the result of more freedom and more room for expression. Mona mentions several artists’ names that use technology in working on their art, such as Rozendaal and Jennifer Mehigen.

In the meantime, Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, a curator who once was the gamechanger at documenta, talks to Liny Agustini and discusses Hito Steyerl, whom she thinks has an extraordinary understanding of digital experiences, and Jordan Wolfson, who also has a thorough understanding of the digital revolution (page 44). She also says that Asian artists – although she actually prefers not to categorize artists by geographical references – have a strong understanding of digital experiences. Technology is at the forefront in Asia, she says.

When talking about Asian artists, we must all be familiar with the name Yayoi Kusama, the pop culture icon who, through her work, has been endlessly exploring polka dots. The exhibition Yayoi Kusama: Life is The Heart of a Rainbow, held at the Singapore National Gallery in 2017 and the Queensland Art Gallery of Modern Art in Australia from the end of 2017 to the beginning of 2018, has drawn hundreds of thousands of people. This exhibition is now exhibiting at the MACAN Museum in Jakarta until September this year. Harper’s Bazaar Indonesia is a proud partner of the event.

We are also very excited to be the host to almost 50 national and international galleries at Art Jakarta 2018, which this year will be celebrating its 10th anniversary. Among the highlighted projects are the installations from 10 selected artists displayed at the reception area of the ballroom of The Ritz-Carlton Jakarta, Pacific Place, with many more special presentations and performances to celebrate this milestone of ours. Join us and let’s celebrate together.
