November is a great time for a dose of Balinese culture as the Balinese gear up for the major Galungan and Kuningan festivals. During this time, you will get to witness some of the more captivating Balinese cultural processions and ceremonies. The second biggest celebration after Nyepi, it is fascinating to know that the Galungan marks the victory of good versus evil, and also the time when the ancestral spirits come down to visit Earth. Preparations begin weeks in advance to the actual day and celebrations continue for a 10-day period until Kuningan, which marks the day the ancestral spirits return to heaven.

If you want to know when the Balinese are prepping for these two festivities, then keep an eye out for the Penjor - tall, ornamental poles made of bamboo and filled with offerings that are usually placed outside homes and businesses. Some are more elaborate than others, but the Penjors lend an air of festivities to the streets of Bali during this time. They are pretty to look at and are unique to Bali so don’t forget a shot or two for your Instagram!
